Urban sketching is creating a drawing or painting on location—observing in the moment and sharing the story of why it interests you. Working directly from the scene is one of the best ways to sketch. It’s a rewarding way to capture the memory and feeling of a place, as well as, enjoy the experience of being there.

When Seattle’s new waterfront park opened, our chapter of urban sketchers flocked down to memorialize the transformation. Where there was once the barrier of a loud, elevated highway, it is now open spaces of urban park connecting the famous Pike Place Market to the waterfront and aquarium, with sweeping views of Mt Rainier and the Puget Sound.

Summer vacation always includes a trip to the Jersey Shore to visit with my family and sketch the seaside towns.

Sketching while you travel is a wonderful way to soak in the details of a location and create a homemade souvenir.
